Media students develop practical and theoretical work that underpins an understanding of the media
and communication industries. Media students plan, make and edit their own films. Film Studies can
provide a creative and practical grounding for careers in the TV and film industry, through film theory,
cinema studies and video making practice.

97% of A Level media students passed their course
in 2010. Aspiring media producer, Elena Walton, completed her work placement at the live set of the BBC’s Big
Questions and now she is studying at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

What can I do with Media & Film?
Each programme in this area provides a progression route to the next level. From level 3 programmes you
can move on to higher education courses in a range of practical media and film making courses and
careers in film and television production, advertising, radio and publishing.

What are the teachers, facilities and resources like?
On the Harrow Weald Campus, media students have access to a brand new Apple Mac suites with
the latest Final Cut Pro software, with professional facilities including:
• 10 edit suites (120 & 140) with Apple Macintosh Pro
G5 computers, Final Cut Studio, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Colour, Compressor, DVD Studio Pro and Adobe CS4
• Computer rooms with multimedia software installed. Adobe CS4, Fuji Fine Pix Digital stills cameras, CanonXM2, Panasonic and Sony digital video cameras
• Professional lighting kits and digital audio recorders
• Media rooms with video projectors connected to DVD/VHS playback and PCs. Sony DV player/ recorders

• Green screen room for green screen filming and experimental film presentations.
Many of our media staff have years of industry experience and have worked on television and film production in the visual effects field for films including ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’, the Oscarnominated ‘The Hours’, ‘Enemy at the Gates’ and ‘Bridget Jones Diary’. Some of the lecturing staff have obtained Masters Degrees in Screenwriting, and have taught at some of the top film schools in the country. The media team has industry contacts which they use to place students in work experience and even paid employment.
