A word from the Proprietress

''I first had the insight that I would one day run my own school through the inspiration of my three daughters and son - Jacqueline, Caroline, Rachel and Jonathan. They made told me that I was a super-mum and super-cook and as a result of their fantastic encouragement I trained as a pre-school teacher.
After completing my training I began work in a newly introduced mobile play group in Northamptonshire. Although it was difficult being the only black member of staff (this was Britain in the 1970’s), it wasn’t a set-back for me as I soon found I had a natural talent for communicating with the children. For instance, if children were upset I would use my wrapper to tie them on my back as we do in Africa. Sometimes children or their parents were not used to these techniques which were unorthodox to them but eventually the children began to love it.
As a result of my ability to handle the children, I gained popularity and credit from parents and colleagues which led to my promotion to position of organiser of mobile playgroups.
In 1976 me and my family moved to Yola, Nigeria where my husband, Allan Deeds was a lecturer at the Federal Advanced Teachers College (now known as The federal College of Education).
Shortly after arriving in Yola I began working at the Army Officer’s Wives Association Nursery School. Although I enjoyed this position, I recognised that there was a severe shortage of nursery provision in the town and felt it was the right time to open Play and Learn School.
The school has now been running for almost 34 years. In this time we have seen huge changes, have had some difficult patches but overall have had huge successes in providing a secure and stimulating learning environment that is treasured by the local community and beyond''.
